I don’t quite understand, but I’m going to take a stab in the red curtain and guess a new version of tumblrette is on its way? If so, I’m excited.

NYT's Article Skimming Interface»

cubicle17:

Last Friday, the New York Times released a prototype of an as-yet-unnamed interface for browsing the Sunday Edition online:

Think of it as an attempt to provide the Sunday Times experience anytime. Of course, there are parts we can’t replicate: the satisfying crinkle of the paper; the circular stain of your coffee; the smell of newsprint. […] Instead, our focus was on the fundamentals of the experience.

I played with this some this morning (with coffee in hand, you know, for the full experience), and I like it a lot. I just wish it weren’t specific to the Sunday Edition. (via DF)

Ha, I probably should have read through my dashboard before posting: I could have just pressed the reblog button.

Anyway, Bill, I think you’ll be happy to know that the content is, in fact, not exclusively from the Sunday Edition. They attempted to recreate the “Sunday Browsing” experience, but the content is continually updated throughout the week. Along these lines, here’s an explanation of the distinct design choice they made to omit dates on the page altogether:

Instead of displaying dates, articles gradually fade as they get older. And you can locate the newest articles with a quick glance.

NY Times Article Skimmer»

I try to refrain from pulling content straight from other sites, but I saw this on Daring Fireball today and couldn’t resist. I see this as an evolutionary step in news website presentation. It’s an experience. Try pressing “s” on your keyboard. If I were a heavy reader of the New York Times, I could actually invision myself using the article skimmer over the standard home page. AJAX search implementation wouldn’t hurt.

Remux Theme now available»

This is the theme I created for Band Names. Hopefully someone will find it useful. The permalink pages are pretty awesome.

Features:

  • Automatic post coloring based on Muxtape’s color scheme.
  • Random post coloring or post coloring by tag (eg: tag a post with “Turquoise” and it’ll appear turquoise) if you know how to comment out some of the javascript.
  • Keyboard shortcuts for pagination, as always.
  • Ridiculous jQuery abound. Centering the images was kind of difficult.
  • Support for groups, day pages, permalink pages, and search are built in. I might add tag support somewhere down the line.

Feel free to email me if you’ve got any suggestions for improvements or if you’re just having technical difficulties.

Band Names»

A few friends and I started a strange tumblelog for recording humorous names for imaginary bands. I spent the evening creating a muxtape ripoff theme for it. I might release it eventually. For now, enjoy.
