Neven Mrgan's tumbl: Tweetbot adds "Last Photo... →
mrgan: A week ago I tweeted a quick idea for iOS apps that let the user select a photo from the device: Today, a new version of Tapbots’ popular twitter client Tweetbot added this very option. You have to hand it to them for just going with a good idea. And yes, they let me know before they… I hope Tumblr adds this to their app next. Wonderful, simple idea.

Listenr 1.3 Available now. And it's FREE. →
listenrapp: That’s right. I’ve decided to make the app free for the time being. The plan is to add some super awesome paid features in upcoming releases, but the core functionality of Listenr will remain available pro bono. Much thanks to everyone who supported me by purchasing the app over the last few months. Now on to the new features: The two big ones this time are Last.fm Scrobbling and...

Listenr App: Listenr version 1.2 is in the... →
listenrapp: Now that summer’s upon us, I’m trying to increment the app more rapidly. I didn’t announce the arrival of Listenr 1.1 because, frankly, it was a bit of an embarrassment. Soon after its approval, I discovered a nasty bug that caused the application to crash consistently on specific blog pages…. This is what I’ve been spending a fair chunk of my evening time on this past...

Changing Contexts
Last week I moved to Mountain View (well, technically Sunnyvale) for the summer and started interning at Bump Technologies. Since then, I’ve been a bit immersed in the world of Bump. Over the past eight days, I’ve worked on half a dozen distinct projects. Hopefully I’ll be able to share some of them with you. I’m just beginning to get my bearings. Expect more substantial...

On set-top box remotes →
Revisiting some “work” I did during the school year. Henry Holtzman offered to pay me around minimum wage to fiddle with set-top boxes and write about them. I bit. It was a fun distraction from problem sets. And I enjoyed donning my tech columnist hat. I think middle school Ethan would have been proud. But frankly, most of the writing was banal. And I can only go through so many...

Spotify is brilliantly architected →
A few members of the Spotify team wrote a paper describing their architecture. It’s very readable if you’re remotely aware of how TCP works. I had no idea the service was using a Peer-to-peer network to do its heavy lifting. It makes a ton of sense, and I hope Apple’s impending streaming service is equally well-engineered. I have my doubts given the legacy of Mobile Me, but hey,...

The Botany of Desire
Exquisite PBS special on the mutualism between mankind and the plants we consume. And I’m sure the book is equally good. I became a fan of Michael Pollan a few years back after reading The Omnivore’s Dilemma. He’s an excellent journalist. And he speaks to such a fundamental question: human sustenance. I recommend everyone watch it. Here, I’ll make it easy: If you...

On sharing myself.
I’ve done a deplorable job at updating this blog regularly. School is partially to blame. But mostly, I just didn’t feel like I had anything groundbreaking to share. I’ve always been unsure about the purpose of Too Epic. The sole reason I made it initially was to fiddle around with making custom themes after my buddy Prashanth introduced me to Tumblr. What a curiously definite...

Listenr version 1.1 submitted to the App Store
Hooray for summertime. Just finished up my first year of college. Now comes the fun. listenrapp: Hopefully it’ll be in your hands by the week’s end. Apologies for the long interlude of silence. This update brings improved streaming and listening to posts from individual blogs:

Scrollet, a tilt scrolling bookmarklet for Firefox... →
Took a break from my homework to make this. Lets you add tilt scrolling to any page in Mobile Safari, assuming you’re using iOS 4 or greater. Also works in Firefox 3.5+ if your computer has an accelerometer (many laptops these days do). Enjoy. It’s very pleasant to use with the Tumblr Dashboard. It has a few issues. Source is on github.

Tumblr Notifier is resurrected. →
Notifier was broken for a bit after Tumblr changed they way they handle new post notifications. I’m happy to report it’s now back up and running. If you have Safari and love getting notified when new content appears in your Dashboard, grab it! You don’t even need to enter your credentials anymore. Source code is available as always. If I have time, I’ll look into making a...

listenrapp: Hao and I are thrilled to announce that Listenr has been submitted to the App Store. Hopefully it’ll be in your hands in a week’s time. It's been a while.
I never was great at regularly updating this site. But five months between posts is a bit ridiculous. So what changes in my life might be relevant to you, dear follower? I am now a student at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. I’m doing a fun UROP at the Media Lab this semester (heaven on the silicon part of earth). They’re paying me to watch TV (of the...

Compatriot Theme v.4 →
The latest version of Compatriot has been pushed to the Theme Garden. I’m finally eating my own dog food with this release. What you see on this blog is identical to what you’ll get upon installing the theme. I’ve got some font-embedding action going on this time around. The header is set in League Gothic and the body text is in Gentium. Tell me if you’d like any...

The Wall Street Journal cripples its Print Page...
And digs itself deeper into irrelevance. Traditional publishers have resorted to perverting their online content with needless pagination and obnoxious advertisements. So what does poor Jimmy Reader do when he has to print a physical copy of the article for whatever reason? Click the nice “Print Version” button, of course. Oh, what’s that, Mr. Publisher? You can’t get ad...

Tumblr Staff: Dashboard API: Part 1 →
Get it while it’s hot! Dashboard posts are now accessible from the Tumblr API, and there’s a shit-ton more coming to the API over the next few weeks days. While I’m sure you guys will concoct plenty of things we haven’t even begun to imagine, the things we’re super-excited to see are any … This calls for celebration.

Tesla Motors Goes Public →
So this is exciting: The IPO filing on Friday from the six-year-old start-up, best known for its $109,000 all-electric Roadster, marks the first public offering from a U.S. automaker since Henry Ford’s Ford Motor Co made its share debut in 1956.

Too Epic is Reborn →
The former iteration of my home page was underwhelming at best. It made abysmal use of Google App Engine’s offerings to the point that my GAE account had been reduced to a free, low-latency static file server (which is by no means a bad thing). But alas, my bank account balance is running low: I figured I should have a nice place to refer potential freelance clients to. So I took a few...

Emergent Trend: Custom Scrollbars
The recent redesigns of maxvoltar.com and orderedlist.com both feature a design subtlety that I haven’t formerly seen in the wild (omitting webkit.org): Minute as they may seem, the custom scrollbars are a nice touch, offering the designer that much more control over the viewing experience (provided you’re using Chrome or Safari, of course). I’m guessing we’ll start...

Showtime, the iPhone web app →
mrgan: Nial Giacomelli has done a bang-up job with Showtime, his web app for keeping track of your favorite TV shows. It’s not fabulous “for a web app”, it’s fabulous period. John Gruber has two fair and true complaints about it: Scrolling (it’s slow even at maximum speed.) The ON/OFF toggle switch has to be tapped (instead of the deeply satisfying native ability to slide it as well.) As...

Twitter begins rolling out official group (list)... →
This is a big deal. I know support for grouping functionality has been much contested across desktop and iPhone Twitter applications. Making it a native API feature is going to change things. Looks like Mr. Brichter has his work cut out for him. The feature appears to have a custom-tailored interface to boot. Twitter is discernibly driving forward with updates abound. I’m excited.
